The Japanese brand Hender Scheme has become famous for rethinking classic sneakers, like adidas Superstar or Maison Margiela Replica. Each pair almost completely repeats the silhouette of the original, while being made by hand from expensive thick leather in neutral shades.
The name Hender Scheme stands for “gender scheme”. It refers to the theory of gender schemes developed by psychologist Sandra Bem. According to her, the child must sort the information into categories of “male” and “female”, understanding how to behave the boy, and how the girl. In other words it is called the formation of gender stereotypes that the Hender Scheme seeks to level out. All models are available in men’s and women’s sizes, whether they are interpretations of famous sneakers, shoes with bows, massive loafers or sandals on the platform.
The founder of the brand, Rio Kashivazaki, worked in a factory, managed to be a shoemaker, and repaired shoes in a shoe shop. In general, he calls himself not a designer, but simply a manufacturer. He does things that he likes.
Sneakers are usually produced in industrial quantities, in huge quantities. This is a product created in factories. The idea of the brand was to rethink it, perform it in a non-classical way, make each pair with hands. This is a kind of art project. In general, the idea of this line is to produce shoes, which are sneakers in their form, but the shoes in content.
Initially, the brand worked with stores, fulfilling the usual order sheet. These are printed documents, where there is basic information about models, materials, minimum batches – technical details, terms of cooperation. Then they simply stopped coping, more and more stores wanted to cooperate with the brand.
Here the understanding has come that it is necessary to present in some other way what the team is doing. The choice fell on a showroom in Paris. As a result, the entire collection was presented here. Since the show began in Paris, the number of stores purchasing the collections has grown by half. In any case, the number of those with whom the brand is working now does not exceed 35 partners.
All products are made by hand, and all this has to be removed first. For this reason, collections are very limited and a pair of shoes has a high price.
