Maison Martin Margiela – French Fashion House, specializing in the production of avant-garde collections of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Thez also produce perfumes, furniture and home decor items.
The brand was founded in 1988 by the Belgian designer Martin Margiela. Refers to the luxury segment of the market. In October 2014, John Galliano was announced as the new creative director of the brand.
The iconic items of the first collection were women’s jackets of a unique cut. The audience was impressed by the innovative design and the ability to “give old clothes new life”. Most of the collection outfits were made from used items.
Martin Margiela skillfully combined materials of different textures in one set, suggested jackets without a single sleeve, dresses with seams out, volumetric shoulder pads over a dress. The media began to call Marzhela the ancestor of deconstructive fashion.
His first collection was a shock for everyone. But at the same time, it was a real discovery. Martin feels the onset of the new. He looked back a dozen seasons ago, took the most boring and casual clothes, and showed how to wear it in a new way.
From the first brand shows, the models’ faces were deliberately concealed: they were hidden under wigs, dyed with paint, covered with stockings or a veil. Martin Margiela himself never bowed out at the end of the show. According to the Fashion House, this method helped the audience to concentrate directly on the collection itself.
In 1989, the brand was awarded the prize “For merits in the field of modern fashion” from A.N.D.A.M. Fashion Awards Paris. In the same year, a jacket created from fragments of broken plates was presented.
